health & safety

Vancouver Acting School is committed to providing a healthy and safe working and learning environment for all employees, contractors and students. This applies to all Vancouver Acting School employees, contractors and students.

MEDICAL INSURANCE REQUIREMENT

BC Medical Insurance is required by law for all students, international as well as Canadian, through the Medical Services Plan of B.C. Students from outside British Columbia and international students should apply for B.C. Medical insurance once arriving and establishing an address in BC. Forms are available on Medical Services Plan website. Coverage starts three months after the month in which you apply so International students on visas should apply upon arrival and establishing a BC address. During the waiting period, your former insurance policy may cover you or you can arrange for private insurance through any broker for your first three months in BC.

COUNSELING

Vancouver Acting School does not have a qualified counselor on staff to help students with personal issues. However, Administration and/or Student Services can provide information on where to contact professional counselors and therapists who are qualified for such a service. The closest resources are listed below.

Do not hesitate to speak to your program’s department head or Student Services if you are going through a tough situation and would like to speak to a counselor. Any issues relating to mental health or personal obstacles that hinder your work will remain confidential.

FIRST AID

A First Aid box is available at the Reception desk on the second self to the right. Student files contain contract with names, address, telephone numbers and name of person to contact in case of emergency as well as any medical information that may be relevant.

SAFETY

Care will be taken at all times to ensure the welfare and safety of all employees, contractors and students. Fire precautions, as detailed by annual Fire Pro Fire Protection audit, will be carried out and instructions for emergency evacuation of the premises clearly displayed. All firefighting equipment recommended by the City of Vancouver will be installed and maintained.

INSURANCES

The School is covered by a public liability insurance policy strictly and only for the school’s premises. All other areas around the school’s premises are the insured responsibility of the Landlords and their parties or intermediaries.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

In the case where the injury appears to be or is serious call 911. Someone must stay with the injured person at all times. After calling 911 the CEO must be contacted immediately. Fire extinguishers are located in the kitchen, in the main hallways and at each entrance/exit. Instructors are responsible for leading students out the fire exits.

EVACUATION PLAN

In the event of an emergency evacuation, all people in the building will exit through the front or rear doors of the building. After exiting the building all evacuees will meet at La Swiss Bakery located at 143 East 3rd Vancouver. At that point the instructor on duty will call emergency services, followed by taking a head count, which will be reported to the CEO.

SMOKING

There is no smoking of either traditional or electronic cigarettes inside the building. Anyone smoking outside is asked to not do so in the loading bay of our building or the building directly behind us as the smoke goes into the vents.

OPERATING HOURS

The school’s business hours are from 8:30 am to 10:00 pm, Monday to Friday and 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday. Classes are typically held during the hours of 9:00 am and 10:00 pm Monday through Friday.

VISITORS

No visitors are permitted during class hours and are never permitted to use school equipment. You are paying to use this equipment and they are not. Please have guests check in at reception. We also ask that there be no guests brought in after regular hours unless permission has been granted in advance. If you expect a visitor, speak to Administration well in advance to make arrangements.
