Part Time Screenwriting Classes

Are you ready to bring your stories to life on the screen? Our part-time screenwriting class is the perfect opportunity to learn the craft of screenwriting from experienced industry professionals. In this class, you'll learn the fundamentals of storytelling, character development, and script formatting, as well as the specific techniques and strategies you need to write compelling and engaging screenplays. You'll also have the opportunity to workshop your scripts and receive feedback from your instructor and peers. Join us and start your journey towards becoming a skilled and successful screenwriter!

Through a combination of interactive lectures, film screenings, script readings, and group workshop of your original script, this once-a-week evening class take writers of all backgrounds to new levels of skill and confidence in a safe, supportive, and professional space. We meet writers all the time who have a story in them, a beloved project they’re wanting to either start or finish, but they’re stuck trying to make the next move. For some, it’s about building a schedule and holding themselves accountable. For others, it’s about not knowing where to go next with characters, plot, or dialogue. And some aren’t sure how to get their script sold or made. Taking a screenwriting class is your opportunity to get serious and get it done.

Course Summary: Creating worlds out of nothing and taking people on wild adventures that change lives is the stuff of gods…and writers! But around every corner lurks a relentless gang of demons: distraction, fear of criticism, self-doubt, and procrastination. We meet aspiring and active writers all the time who have a story in them or a creative project they want to get moving, but they’re stuck trying to make the next move. Matthew Kowalchuk

Matthew Kowalchuk stands out as a rising star in Canada’s filmmaking and screenwriting scene. His impressive debut feature film Lawrence & Holloman, which he co-wrote with Daniel Arnold, has received rave reviews worldwide and clinched the prestigious Canadian Comedy Award for Best Feature. Matthew and Arnold’s exceptional writing skills also earned them nominations for screenwriting awards at both the Leos and Canadian Comedy Awards.

Lawrence & Holloman has amassed an impressive array of accolades, including the Emerging Director Award at VIFF, Rising Star Filmmaker at EIFF, Best Director of a Comedy at VTXIFF, and Best Comedy at RxSM Austin. These awards highlight Matthew’s talent and the film’s universal appeal, solidifying its place as a standout piece in t he comedy genre.

Matthew’s creative journey extends beyond feature films. He has garnered acclaim for his work on award-winning shorts such as The Janitors, which won the National Screen Institute Drama Prize, and Hearing Test. His versatility is further showcased in the live-action animated commissioned short film Penguins (are so sensitive to my needs), demonstrating his ability to excel in diverse storytelling formats.

One of Matthew’s recent shorts, Bedbugs: A Musical Love Story, made a significant impact at its debut in the Edmonton International Film Festival, winning the Canadian Short Film Award. This achievement underscores Matthew’s ability to create captivating narratives that resonate with audiences and critics alike.
