Alumni Interview – Jinjara Mitchell

Alumni Interview – Jinjara Mitchell

Let your passion for acting shine every single day in the program, and don’t be afraid to learn and try new things. The program is hard work, but that is what is going to get you to where you need to go.

What kinds of things were you looking for in a school when you were exploring your options?

I was looking for a school that would help me to break into the film industry. I wanted to find a program that would provide me with the confidence I needed to take the required steps to successfully find an agent. I was also looking to expand my acting technique beyond my theatre background and learn how to perform specifically for a career in Film and Television.

Was there anything specific that made you choose Vancouver Acting School as your place of study?

I chose Vancouver Acting School because they offered everything I was looking for in a school. One of the things that set them apart as a school was that they had actual casting sessions going on in the building and had a talent agency attached. I also liked that they offered ongoing rehearsal space to alumni so we could continue to work on our creative endeavours even after the completion of their program.

How was your experience in the Acting for Film, Television & Voice-Over Program?

The Acting for Film, Television and Voice-Over program met what I was looking for in so many areas. I learned how to adjust my theatre-based acting training to be suitable for Film and Television. I also learned important business skills like how to apply to agencies. A bonus for me was getting the opportunity to meet some incredible people and instructors throughout my time there; my connections to them have opened up so many doors in my career.

What did you find unique about your experience?

I think Vancouver Acting School had a few unique approaches. The voice-over course helped me to hone in on another aspect of my craft I had never thought about expanding. I also loved that they offered a business course where we were able to meet and ask questions of local agents and learn the business side of the acting industry.

How would you summarize your experience as a whole?

Being new to Vancouver, the program gave me a great opportunity to really immerse myself in my craft and meet some great people. It was a fantastic starting point for someone who was completely new to the Film and Television industry here in Vancouver.

What kind of industry related success have you found after graduating from your program?

I have booked a role on Arrow, as well as a role in the Lifetime movie The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story. I have been in multiple commercials, including an upcoming Honda Commercial. I’ve also been in many student films and was the lead in a popular music video. I even found success in the voice-over industry and have voiced a couple radio ads and PSAs.

If you were going to give advice to a new actor entering Vancouver Acting School’s acting program, what would it be?

Let your passion for acting shine every single day in the program, and don’t be afraid to learn and try new things. The program is hard work, but that is what is going to get you to where you need to go.
