Students will prepare and present scenes on camera each night in a simulated audition process, receiving personalized feedback and support.

Course description

The class will be focused on helping each actor finally understand they are enough and have something to contribute as themselves. The techniques used in this class will help the actors stop thinking and start feeling. Actors will be guided to react moment to moment as opposed to preplanning each moment of the audition. A large focus of the class will be on the circumstances and making sure each actor is committed to the given circumstances of the scene. We will explore the full audition process. We will act on camera, receive in class feedback and the scenes will be brought home to review.

The class is designed to help each actor work towards their personal best. We will incorporate feedback from casting / agents to help each actor overcome obstacles and break down what is holding them back.

Topics Covered

In this class you will learn and implement:

  • Process & rehearsal
  • Research – project, character, story
  • Emotional connectivity
  • Truthfulness and spontaneity in a technical environment
  • Adjustments for the lenses
  • Dissecting the beats of a scene
  • Seeing the scene from multiple paradigms
  • Creating business and using props
  • The preparation required the night before, and moments before you perform
  • Identifying and honouring the facts of a scene

“Jillian is a thoughtful, encouraging, and knowledgeable teacher. She covered so many aspects of auditioning and the fundamentals of on camera technique. She re-works your sides to help you get your best with intent, eye lines, and how to speak from a truthful place. She brought in working actors and agents to coach us and provide a different perspective other than just hers. I also appreciated the 1-on-1 coaching she provided before auditions over FaceTime. Can’t wait to study with her again!

– Manraj Sidhu

Course description

Much like going to the gym once a week is the minimum one must do to not lose basic fitness, in my personal professional experience, auditioning once a week is essential to staying primed and “room” ready. Consistently simulating the “hot seat” of the audition room with challenging auditions, done in the safe space of a nurturing class, will markedly improve your confidence and focus in real world auditions. Or take your already strong audition game to the next level by tackling more demanding meatier leading roles. Come work, come play! I’d love to support you in deepening your ownership of “the room” whatever that means for you.

Course Summary

Johannah Newmarch is one of the most sought after talents in the city. Her resume reflects her exceptional skills on both the audition room and on set. In this class she will show you the finer aspects of the auditioning process to give you that professional edge in the room.

Topics Covered

In this class you will learn and implement:

  • Being present: Genuinely connecting with and listening to your reader.
  • Stillness: Smoothing out our physical tics so we are calm and watchable on camera.
  • Blocking an audition: using simple clear movements and eyelines to most effectively bring an audition to life.
  • Bringing consistency and discipline to your script analysis. (The thing most actors tend to be weakest at.)
  • Begin the life long task of creating a working relationship with your inner critic.

I can’t begin to express how much Johannah has done for my acting career since I started studying under her. On a professional level she has helped me open myself up to my own reality, which has allowed me to really reach new heights in how I express myself and relate to the characters that I am playing. For me, as for many actors, it started with taking down so many walls and barriers that inhibited me from being able to be free as a performer. Every single time I step out of her class I felt like I am a better actor than before I walked in. On a personal level, Johannah has always been available to share her vast experience in the industry which has given me so much direction and understanding as to where my career is heading and why. In my opinion there are teachers, and then there are mentors. This city has many acting teachers, but actors will have an extremely difficult time finding a mentor that is not only a passionate and excellent instructor, but cares so deeply about her students and their careers. We are all very fortunate to study under Johannah and I personally owe all of my early success in this industry to what she has taught me.
